Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled: 7 Great Quotes For Tough Times

"Choose to be optimistic, it feels better." said the Dalai Lama.

During these perilous times, we can choose to focus on what is good and stay positive, or we can fall victim to negativity and complain about the challenges. An optimistic person will always focus on the good and remain positive.

Being optimistic enriches our souls. When everything around us seems to be crumbling and out of sorts, optimism makes a way for light and hope. Optimism creates a road to gratitude and provides us peace, even joy, amidst chaos. As Vivian Green said "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning how to dance in the rain."

When times are tough

When times are tough, a quote can sometimes do wonders. They serve as a pick-me-up and renew our perspective.

Some quotes have been repeated and recycled over and over because they contain powerful jolts of encouragement, motivation and insight. But of all the things that people - famous or otherwise—have said, what has made some quotes so powerful that they become mantras and celebrated parts of society’s lexicon for generations?

“There’s power in the words themselves”, says Ward Farnsworth, Dean of the University of Texas School of Law. Farnsworth says that people have an “appetite for well-expressed wisdom, motivational or otherwise.”

This is especially evident during times of crisis.

wisdom to glean

As we all struggle with incredible challenges due to Covid19, perhaps some wisdom from the past will, in some way, help us with the present.

"Keep calm and carry on," was an expression of resilience used by the British government during world war II to calm and boost the morale of its citizens. It's especially poignant now as coronavirus is invoking likeness to war. We must remain courageously persistent as we set our sights on victory.

"This too shall pass," is said to have originated with the poet Rumi. If we can remember that adversity will eventually pass, we can weather life’s storms in a way that facilitates our growth and can benefit us.

In other words, we must not waste powerful opportunities to learn through these challenging times. Rather, we can find new ways to adapt to our new normal and move forward in a positive way.

This lesson is crucial because...

we shall pass this way but once

The missionary Etienne de Grellet once said, "We shall pass this way but once; any good that I can learn or do, any kindness I can show to any human being, let me do it now."

Yet, out of the multitude of greats who throughout history have spoken for human dignity in times of suffering and loss, no voice is more compelling than that of Anne Frank.

A quote by Anne Frank that seems especially suitable for the time in which we are living in now is this…“Set a good example, and it won't take long for others to follow.”

the time is now

The time is now to stay informed about what's happening in your community. Follow the directions of your state and local authorities, and take the recommended steps to help keep you and others safe.

The time is now to rid ourselves of harsh speech, blame, hyperbolic gossip, negativity and unnecessary judgment - none of which serve any positive purpose. Are you listening, journalists?

Simply put by Martin Luther King, Jr. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” So, as Ellen Degeneres always says…”Be kind to one another."

We are in this crisis together

We are in this crisis together, may we forge through it together -- with fortitude, light and love.
